The Loire Valley

Le Moulin Verneau is situated on the outskirts of the small village of Parcay-les-Pins in Department 49, Maine-et-Loire. The village has about 800 residents, many of whom are expats from the UK. The village centre has a great little bar-restaurant, owned by an English couple and both French and English enjoy their hospitality all year round. In Summer the bar overflows into the village centre with live music and entertainment.

Parcay les Pins has a small shop and bakers for the daily essentials, there is also a hairdresser, the library and the post office within the Marie. Parcay les Pins is about 20 kms north of both Saumur and Bourgueil.

Saumur is on the River Loire, the expanse of which is so great there is a large island in the middle. Saumur is home to many of the large wine houses, and on the outskirts the local sparkling wines are a particular specialty. The town itself holds a large market on Saturday mornings, has many shops and restaurant and is towered over by the magnificent chateau.

Bourgueil is slightly smaller but almost completely enveloped in vineyards.  It also has a vibrant weekly market on a Tuesday morning which is a great way to soak up the essence of living in France.  Bourgueil and St Nicholas de Bourgueil produce world class red wines and tasting is available at most domaines.

Langeais, smaller still is one of the prettiest little towns in the area.  The Chateau towers over the main street, which is lined with little eateries and shops to browse in.  On Sunday the little town is bustling with locals and tourists enjoying the large market and enjoying a coffee or a 'petit rose'.

Further afield is Tours, Angers, Chinon, and Le Mans, just an hour away.  All worth a visit, but of course Le Mans for its motoring events.
